WORD Bookstores Books of the Week - July 2, 2014

In the Largehearted Word series, the staff of Brooklyn's WORD bookstore highlights several new books released this week.

WORD Bookstores are independent neighborhood bookstores in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and Jersey City, New Jersey. Our primary goal is to be whatever our communities needs us to be, which currently means carrying everything from fiction to nonfiction to absurdly cute cards and stationery. In addition, we're fiends for a good event, from the classic author reading and Q&A to potlucks and a basketball league (and anything set in a bar). If a weekly dose of WORD here isn't enough for you, follow us on Twitter: @wordbookstores.

Lunch Poems

Lunch Poems
by Frank O'Hara

"My life held precariously in the seeing / hands of others." Fifty years since its now-iconic orange and blue cover re-entered the bustling, amorous New York City from which they were derived, City Lights has reissued the collection with a new introduction and a supplementary appendix with facsimile drafts, letters, and other wonders,

Invisible Beasts

Invisible Beasts
by Sharona Muir

Billed as "Aesop's fables for the Age of Extinction," this imaginative collection constitutes a bestiary that is as curious as it is unsettling.

More Curious

More Curious
by Sean Wilsey

Akin to Travels With Charley, John Steinbeck's '60s-era survey of America from a car window, Sean Wisley's More Curious ups the ante for the age of more -- more information, more people, more choices, more confusion, more fast-food options.

S Street Rising

S Street Rising
by Ruben Castaneda

If you've ever wanted to understand the reality behind a series like The Wire and of the current socioeconomic situation in many urban centers throughout the country, this book is worth a read and a re-read.
